I used Adobe Illustrator to create a mood board of lots of the MOBAW photographs. These are a selected few from the range of files that were provided. I can use any of these images in my leaflet, however I will have to choose carefully as there are thousands of photos but only 8 places on my leaflet for images. It can be adapted, although that is the plan from my first draft/template.

Illustration Styles Research- Pop up Book
Today I have looked into different illustrative styles and what I can use within my paper engineering project. I came across a really useful website and here is a link: http://www.illustrationweb.com/styles
It clearly shows a large variety of different styles and some example next to the topics, making it really easy to understand.
The screenshot above shows the children's category and this style is very colourful and often has a lot going on in the illustration. I found out that in comparison to a more contemporary style, it has quite a cluttered feel and because of this it may mean that for an older audience, it could be interpreted as being messy and over the top.
On the other hand because my pop up is going to be for children, this style would work really well. I would also include different textures in the book to make it even more interesting for my target audience. For example I will use quilling techniques and wool/thread for the characters hair, which would really stand out for a younger audience.
There was also a paper art section which was really useful when researching for this project. Although, this is a lot more complex visually and therefore I would need to make it work for my specific genre and audience, however I could just simplify it slightly.

Typography Research- Pop up Book
In this blog post, I have put together some research on suitable typography for a children's pop up book that I am creating for my 'Peep show' project. I started off by looking at general fonts that are a bit more fun, but still clear and understandable for a younger audience. Here are some images below of the ones that I found:

As you can see, all of the above are very colourful and for the most part, fairly bold. This makes it clear and a lot more interesting for a younger audience. I could include similar ones in my own handmade book.
I then looked into a more creative aspect of typography within a pop up book specifically, and these are the images I found below:
These are a lot more unique and clever. The pop up is actually the type as well and because of this, it is probably a little bit more complex and therefore aimed at a slightly older age range.

MOBAW Live Brief Project- First Thoughts
For this project, we are working with the director of The Museum of Bath at Work to design and produce a new leaflet, as part of their promotional material. After the client meeting, I found out that the leaflet was one of the most popular advertising methods that the museum use. This means that the leaflet needs to be clear, interesting, eye-catching and engaging.
We got a lot of information on the museum itself, but not so much on the actual design element of the leaflet. This will make it a little bit difficult to come up with a first draft, as I am not entirely sure what the client likes or wants. Although I do have an idea on what audience I am going to target, as the director had some statistics of the age groups of visitors that attend the museum. These were mostly older local residents, so I would like to attract mainly tourists, as well as international students of all ages to visit the museum. This would hopefully lift the visiting numbers and make the museum on the list of things to do when visiting Bath.
My expectations for this project will be a complete and finalised leaflet, with lots of information about the museum and why you should visit. It will be clear and understandable, stand out from the museum's competitors and attract people to visit The Museum of Bath at Work.

Research Project- Harvard Referencing
Harvard referencing is a method to cite information sources used in work or projects. There are two types of citing within the Harvard references, one of which is in-text citations and these are directly quoting from a source within the main body of text. The second is reference lists, which are located at the very end of project, that displays full citations for sources used in the whole assignment.
I have decided to do my referencing as a list, this is because I think this keeps the main body text used in my project very tidy and keeps the links to the sources all together and organised.
Below are some examples of Harvard Referencing,

Laser Cutter Template Trial
I put together a patten template on Adobe Illustrator, so I could try out the college laser cutter. Below is an image of what my template looked like when I first started this process.
I have also attached another more updated image of my final template. The black part is going to stay and the white parts will be cut away. I was hoping to go for a lattice effect and think that the design turned out really well. Although I used a simple heart image to trace at the beggining, all the rest I did by hand and did not trace or follow any guidelines.
I will update this post by adding the finished cut out design, let's hope it works!
*UPDATE
Here was the first trial of using the laser cutter:
The cut lines weren't sharp and some of the cut outs broke or didn't fully cut. We adjusted the settings slightly and this is the second trial:
This worked a lot better and am really happy with the results.

Music Flyer
For this task we had an outside brief from the music department. This was to create a music flyer advertising the new University level HNC music course. We were given a sheet with the relevant information on that we could include within the flyer, I could then present this how I wanted.
The image below was the first draft that I came up with. I used the college brand colours to keep it tied in with the college, as well as putting the main benefits of the course clearly on the front, which could attract students and make them want to sign up. Finally I used a suitable picture that straight away indicates the topic of the flyer.
I then got some constructive criticism on the design layout of my flyer and the feedback was:
-Great image
-Good colour scheme
-Do not like central text
-Title font too formal
-Little bit dull
The client also said that a mix of both mine and Meg's flyer would be great, so Meg and I collaborated and worked together to combine our layouts to create the desired look. We came up with a couple of options for the client to chose from using elements from our original designs.
Above are the finished results. The colours look a lot more vibrant and the text is very clearly laid out, the title is large and bold and therefore eye-catching and accessible. The client really likes the new designs and the final decision on which flyer wins is yet to be announced.
